Taoism and Espresso – not tea?

You might wonder what we talk about espresso and coffee here. Well yes, this is part of our Taoism as well. In Tin Yat Lineage, we have a subject called “Tao.Taste” which teaches you about taste, eating, drinking and life-style that make your life better, healthier and more enjoyable. Many people treat coffee and espresso as “wake up booster” or something like that. How many really know about the real espresso at all? When you go to starbucks or second cup, those espresso are often poorly made because the person who do the job isn’t really putting their heart into the cup of espresso and isn’t really skilled to do the job. It turns out 9 out of 9 cups of coffee / espresso there are bitter, sour and worst spoiled. How can you enjoy a good cup of espresso and know what it is about?

In Tao.Taste, we talk about coffee and espresso as well, with Taoism wisdom. Back then in 2009-2010, that is the time when Tao.taste started and we got into coffee and the art of coffee. Turn out that good coffee are not really a “wake up booster” or anything like that at all. Indeed, I can sleep very well after drinking a good cup of coffee as well.

A good cup of espress, done right and with the heart in it, you don’t need anything but the cup, the espresso beans, and the machine and steam milk. No sugar is need, no honey and no other sweets. When you drink it, it will taste like sugar is added because of the nice steam milk that you slide into the cup with skills. This is something deep and hard to understand. Let me make a cup for you first.. here:

You might think that a cup of espresso is easy to make if you have the machine that is top grade. Sorry, no. We bought the highest grade of this espresso maker of the Breville brand already and it takes a long time to learn how to make one successful and qualified cup of espresso too. Yes you can make a cup of “so-called”qualified espresso in most people’s eyes, but it is not right in our eyes under the wisdom of Taoism. If your espresso is bitter, toss. This is not good. Guess how many cups of espresso we drank on day one to learn it right? 20 cups. and still not yet right. We had to give up…

Learning Taoism is like this too. Sometimes you train and cultivate very hard and somehow because you miss a little step or your forget to tell your master about your progress, you just went on and on yourself, but in the wrong direction. Learning Taoism and drinking espresso is similar this way, things are both-ways interactive. The espresso won’t turn out good even you want it to be good and keep making it, you need to be a scientist to see all the numbers, meters, and observe which part is making what changes and then you tweak around the settings again and again to make a cup of good espresso for yourself. Taoism is the same with learning. You must not only know to cultivate all the time, you also need to know that you must also be interactive with your master as well. You must tell them everything in order for them to teach you well too. Just doing things over and over again won’t make you go anywhere much, if you gone the wrong way all the time.
